How Ontario land transfer tax works
The tax is charged in brackets, so each slice of the price is taxed at its own rate:
| Portion of the purchase price | Rate |
|---|---|
| Up to $55,000 | 0.5% |
| $55,000 to $250,000 | 1.0% |
| $250,000 to $400,000 | 1.5% |
| $400,000 to $2,000,000 | 2.0% |
| Over $2,000,000 (one or two single family residences) | 2.5% |
On a $400,000 home that adds up to $4,475. Read the full Ontario land transfer tax guide, see how much money you need to buy a house in Ontario, or check the first-time home buyer programs you may qualify for.
