Byron, London Ontario: Homes for Sale and Neighbourhood Guide
A southwest London neighbourhood beside Springbank Park, with its own main street and a ski hill.
Byron is a neighbourhood in southwest London, and it is also the name of one of the City of London’s planning districts. The City’s own neighbourhood guide describes it as having a small-town feel, with a commercial heart at Commissioners Road and Boler Road and a second cluster of shops at Boler Road and Byron Baseline Road. If you are searching for Byron, London Ontario homes for sale, that main-street core is usually the first thing people want to be close to.
Where Byron sits
The City groups Byron with its southwest neighbourhoods and lists Hazelden, Riverbend and Westmount as nearby areas. Commissioners Road West is the spine: the Byron branch of London Public Library is at 1295 Commissioners Road West, and Springbank Park’s address is 1085 Commissioners Road West.
Parks and recreation
Few London neighbourhoods have this much recreation land on their doorstep, and all of it is confirmed on City or operator websites.
- Springbank Park. The City lists it among London’s major parks, with a wading pool, play structures, mini soccer fields, a skateboard park, a bandshell, picnic sites and Storybook Gardens, which has an outdoor rink.
- Jorgenson Park and the Byron Optimist Community Centre. The community centre is at 1306 Norman Avenue and has a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room and a kitchen. The park around it has tennis courts, a soccer pitch, a baseball diamond, playground equipment and an outdoor pool.
- Boler Mountain. At 689 Griffith Street, Boler is a not-for-profit that began as the London Ski Club in 1949 and took its current name in 2010. Winter means skiing, snowboarding and tubing. The green season brings a treetop adventure park and mountain biking.
- Warbler Woods. The City lists this Environmentally Significant Area at 1560 Commissioners Road West with a walking trail. The Upper Thames River Conservation Authority manages it for the City, and also publishes a map for the Byron Valley ESA.
In City-managed ESAs, dogs must be on a leash of two metres or less and bicycles are not allowed on the trails, so these are walking woods rather than riding ones.
Schools named for the neighbourhood
The City’s guide says Byron has five elementary schools: Byron Northview, Byron Southwood and Byron Somerset public schools, plus St. George and St. Theresa Catholic schools. All five appear on the school lists of the Thames Valley District School Board or the London District Catholic School Board. The City adds that Saunders and St. Thomas Aquinas secondary schools sit just outside Byron and serve students from it.
Which school a child attends depends on the home address, and boundaries can change. Use each board’s school locator for the exact street before you rely on a listing description. We do not rank schools.
Housing and price context
We are not going to describe Byron’s housing stock in detail here, because the City’s guide does not, and we would rather show you current listings than generalize. The same goes for prices. The London and St. Thomas Association of REALTORS® publishes benchmarks for London North, South and East, not for Byron itself, and we could not confirm from LSTAR which of those areas Byron is counted in. Our London real estate page has the city-wide figures, and we can pull recent Byron sales for you directly.
How Byron compares
Buyers who like Byron often look at Oakridge and Lambeth as well. Lambeth shares the village-main-street idea, while Oakridge trades a main street for a large central park. For a wider look at how to compare areas, see our guide to family-friendly London neighbourhoods.
What to ask your REALTOR® about Byron
- How close is this home to Commissioners and Boler, and does that change traffic or parking on the street?
- Is the lot sloped or backing onto a ravine, woodlot or ESA, and are there any restrictions on fences, trees or additions?
- Which public and Catholic schools is this exact address assigned to this year?
- How near is the property to Boler Mountain, and what do winter evenings sound and look like from the yard?
- What have comparable homes on nearby streets sold for in the past six months?
- How old are the roof, furnace and windows, and what did the last home inspection flag?
