What Exeter is
Exeter is the main urban centre of the Municipality of South Huron, in Huron County. South Huron was formed in 2001 when the Town of Exeter joined the townships of Stephen and Usborne. The municipal office is in Exeter, and the municipality provides water, wastewater, garbage and recycling, roads and recreation. Exeter sits north of London, which makes it a candidate for buyers who work in the city but want a smaller community.
What buying a home here is like
In a town that sits inside a larger rural municipality, the biggest question is often where the property falls. A home in Exeter itself is likelier to have municipal services than one in the surrounding townships of Stephen or Usborne. Do not assume. Ask your REALTOR® to confirm, address by address, whether the property has municipal water and sewer or a well and septic.
Exeter also draws people from outside the area, so check the commute honestly. Drive it at the hours you would actually travel before you commit, rather than relying on a map estimate. We deliberately do not quote drive times here because they depend heavily on traffic and weather.
Local anchors worth knowing
- South Huron Hospital. At 24 Huron Street West, it is a 19-bed facility with a 24-hour emergency department, operated by Huron Health System. It serves South Huron and neighbouring communities.
- South Huron municipal office. The place to take questions about building, zoning and services.
- Huron County. Ask which services come from the county and which from the municipality for the address you are considering.
- Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority. It has its offices near Exeter and manages conservation lands in the area, including Parkhill Conservation Area. See Parkhill for an example.
