St. Marys Real Estate: A Stone Town Between London and Stratford

A limestone-built town on the Thames, between London and Stratford, with its own rec facilities.

What St. Marys is

St. Marys is a town on the Thames River in Perth County. The 2021 Census counted 7,386 people. The town describes itself as centrally located between Stratford and London. It is known as the Stone Town because so many of its buildings were made from local limestone.

What buying a home here is like

A limestone town means character homes, and character homes mean due diligence. Stone and older masonry buildings need an inspector who understands them: ask about mortar condition, moisture in basements, original windows and the age of mechanical systems. If you are drawn to a heritage-style property, ask whether any heritage designation applies, because that can affect what you can change. Your REALTOR® can help you ask the town the right question before you commit.

Newer homes on the edges of town raise a different set of questions, mainly around lot sizes, drainage and what the builder has finished. Because St. Marys runs its own government despite sitting inside Perth County, it is worth confirming who handles services for each address.

Local anchors worth knowing

  • Lind Sportsplex and Pyramid Recreation Centre. Both are listed on the town’s website as recreation facilities, along with a youth centre.
  • Parks, trails and green spaces. The town lists these on its site, and the Grand Trunk Trail is referenced there.
  • St. Marys Quarry. A well-known local landmark that ties back to the town’s limestone heritage.
  • St. Marys Public Library and the St. Marys Museum and Archives. Both are on the town’s website.

What to ask your REALTOR® about St. Marys

  • Is this a stone or heritage-style home, and is a specialist inspection a good idea?
  • If I work in London or Stratford, what does my realistic commute look like at the hours I would travel?
  • How are comparable homes priced in town compared with the nearby cities?
  • What are the taxes and utility costs on this particular property?
  • Are there any easements, flood or drainage issues I should ask the town about?

For a bigger-city comparison, you may also want to see Stratford, the nearest larger centre in Perth County.
