Tillsonburg Real Estate: Homes in a Fast-Growing Oxford Town

A growing Oxford County town of 18,615 with a lakeside park, a national historic site and its own hospital.

What Tillsonburg is

Tillsonburg is a town in Oxford County. The 2021 Census counted 18,615 residents, up 17.3% from the previous census, which makes it one of the faster-growing places in this part of Ontario. It is named for the Tillson family, whose history is still very visible in the town.

What buying a home here is like

Rapid growth shapes the buyer experience. In a town that has been adding people, you will often find newer homes and ongoing development alongside older streets. That is a good reason to look at the surroundings, not only the house: ask what is planned, built or zoned next door and at the end of the street.

Buyers coming from larger cities often notice the difference in scale. The town is compact, and many errands are close. If you are moving from London, ask your REALTOR® what the change in lifestyle and costs might look like, because the right neighbourhood for you depends on how you actually live.

Local anchors worth knowing

  • Annandale National Historic Site and Tillsonburg Museum. The house was built by E.D. Tillson, the town’s first mayor, in the early 1880s and is known for its Aesthetic Movement interior. The museum operates on the site.
  • Lake Lisgar. The lake lies below the house and was created by a dam; the town’s waterpark is on its shores in summer.
  • Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital. It is at 167 Rolph Street and has an emergency department. It serves Tillsonburg and the surrounding area.
  • Oxford County. The town is one of eight area municipalities under the county, which provides services such as paramedics, roads and waste collection.

What to ask your REALTOR® about Tillsonburg

  • What has been built or approved near this property, and how might that change the street?
  • For a newer home, what warranty coverage applies, and who do I contact for deficiencies?
  • How do prices on this street compare with similar homes in Ingersoll or Woodstock?
  • If I commute, what route would I take, and how does it handle winter driving?
  • What are the taxes, and which services come from the town versus the county?
